Why The DreamStation Auto CPAP Machine DSX500T11? – A Comprehensive Review
Sleep apnea and other respiratory disorders may cause you sleepless nights. Could this be the solution to your problem?
There are scores of people in the world with sleep disorders, but only a handful of them know how to tackle their struggle. There has been a shortage of information on CPAP, which, unknown to most, helps you sleep better and even improves your overall health.
What is CPAP?
Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) is a treatment that helps keep the airwaves open during sleep, especially for people who suffer from sleep apnea. It can also be used on pre-term infants who have respiratory concerns.
When you suffer from sleep apnea, your airwaves fail to let in enough air. You may not realize this as you sleep, but the constant pauses in breathing (sometimes as 30 per hour) lead to a lack of oxygen in the brain, at least for the period of the pauses. If a solution is not found, you may suffer from bigger conditions that result from lack of enough oxygen in your brains, such as an increased risk for heart disease, hypertension, and stroke. Additionally, the incessant snoring that accompanies sleep apnea is a social stigma that could cost your love life.
Your Ideal CPAP Machine
When you finally find (with relief) that there exists a machine that could ease your breathing disorder, you find yourself in a dilemma of what to look for in the machine. Well, here are the most important features that any decent CPAP machine should possess:
Noise-It goes without saying that sleep time should be as quiet as possible, especially for the benefit of those sharing your space. Most devices are made to be below 30 decibels, but some are louder than others. Go for one that is either 30dbs or less.
Type of the mask-This part is undoubtedly the most important. You want a mask that fits just right without being in your space and one that causes you the least distraction. Click here for a full review of the different types of masks.
Inbuilt Humidifier-A humidifier helps keep your airwaves hydrated because the constant blowing of air into them could cause dryness. While some machines have the humidifier as an added feature, it would be better to have it installed automatically.
Portability-If you are a frequent traveler, there is a need to have a lightweight machine that you can haul around easily. Also, check that it comes with multiple adapters so that you have an easy time using it in different places during your travels. You can alternatively get a separate battery-operated one that you can designate for your travels.
This device has taken into consideration emerging technologies to present you with a sleek device that auto-adjusts to keep up with your breathing.
- Sleek, New Design.
The fact that is made for comfort during sleep does not mean that this device should be without form. It measures 11 x 7 x 4 inches and weighs 4lbs, which is good news for you, regular travelers. It is small and compact, easily portable. The front display is colored and has a dial that you can use to navigate the menu. One more thing about the display; you can see everything from the comfort of your bed. There is no need to get off and read the screen. It has a light sensor that automatically adjusts the light on the display to suit the room. It has a re-washable dark blue tray filter and a light blue one other that should be replaced every 30 days.
- Opti-Start technology
This new technology monitors the amount of pressure that you need during sleep. If this flow smooth, without any major pauses in breathing, it retains the standard pressure. If it detects any distress, it adjusts the pressure to deal with it accordingly. All this happens automatically, so you will not be distracted from sleep. This feature kicks in after the machine has recorded its first 30 hours. One of the most important aspects of this feature is that it records every incidence where a distress occurred, which led to the automatic increase in pressure.
- Humidifier Installed
It has a heated humidifier in place, so there won’t be the need to install it manually. Though the humidifier is heated, it is designed in the dry-box technology that prevents water from making its way back into the humidifier. The water chamber, which sits comfortably in the machine, is removable for easy cleaning (dishwasher friendly) and replacement.
The humidifier works throughout the night, blowing warm air that ranges from 0 to 5, with 0 being no air and 5 being the warmest you can get. The humidifier is self-regulating, adjusting itself to suit the night’s heat demands.
- Low Noise Levels
This machine keeps the standard levels, 30dbs. At this level, the noise is low and will not affect your sleep or that of your partner, at least after the first few days into therapy.
- The ideal mask fit
The device checks for any leaks when you put on the mask and notifies you of any leaks. You can then make the switch to one that fits you better. If the mask slips off at night as a result of tossing and turning, therapy stops and the record is entered into the machine. You can connect the device to Bluetooth via the DreamMapper app, which is compatible with both Android and iOS systems.
Things That Could Be Improved
Although the noise levels are quite low at 30dbs, there are competitor products with lower levels. Philips Respironics could do better here.
The package does not include the facemask, which some reviewers feel is an impediment. The manufacturer sells a well-fitting mask separately.
